On Ash Wednesday – 40 days before Easter – someone makes the sign of the cross on our heads with ashes. Then they say, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
It’s a refreshing moment of honesty. There will come a day . . .
But within the Christian community we also know that “we do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.” (Romans 14.7)
